Use the 2000 Presidential Election to Analyze the Electoral College

Wrap It Up

While re-calculating the election, consider a few critical questions.

How does rounding effect the outcome of the election?

How do the new rules impact third party candidates? And how do those third party candidates impact the general election?

Remember that each state determines how its Electoral Votes are cast. What if only some states adopt this reform? How would that impact the election?

If only California adopts the reform, who stands to benefit the most?

The bottom line is... is this reform a good idea? Does it better represent the will of the people, or is it open to more oddities than the current system?

After your small group has discussed these questions, you should each make your own individual conclusions. Decide whether you support or oppose this amendment, and whether the Electoral College should be left alone, reformed, or abolished.

Use information you found on the internet along with your new election results to support your argument in a letter to your Congressman or Senator.

A good letter should include:

  • Multiple paragraphs
  • Supporting Evidence
  • Thoughtful Organization
  • Proper Letter Format
